This training offers an introduction to neurodiversity-affirming concepts and their application within child and play therapy practice. Participants will explore the foundations of the neurodiversity paradigm, including the understanding that neurological differences such as autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, learning disabilities, and other forms of neurodivergence are natural variations of human diversity rather than deficits to be cured or normalized. The training will examine the impact of ableism, stigma, and deficit-based models on neurodivergent children and their families while emphasizing approaches that promote dignity, autonomy, authenticity, and self-advocacy. Participants will gain an understanding of key neurodiversity-affirming concepts including regulation versus compliance, sensory differences, the double empathy theory, and lived experience trauma.
Define the neurodiversity paradigm and describe core neurodiversity-affirming concepts relevant to child and play therapy practice.
Identify the impact of ableism, dysregulation, and trauma in child and play therapy goals.
Differentiate between compliance-based interventions and neurodiversity-affirming therapeutic approaches that support the all the time therapy goals in AutPlay Therapy - self-worth, identity awareness, advocacy, and autonomy.
Apply neurodiversity-affirming principles to the therapeutic environment, play therapy interventions, and therapist-child relationship.
